EFCC Declares Ex-Governor Timipre Sylva Wanted
  • PublishedNovember 10, 2025

The news that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared Timipre Sylva, a former Governor of Bayelsa State and former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources under President Muhammadu Buhari, wanted has sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s political landscape. It’s not every day that a man who once walked the corridors of power finds himself at the center of a national manhunt.

The Allegations Behind the Notice

According to EFCC’s official statement, Sylva is wanted in connection with a US $14.86 million fraud case involving conspiracy and dishonest conversion of public funds. The funds, reportedly invested by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) into Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited, were meant to support a major refinery project.

However, investigators allege that the money was diverted , and now, the EFCC is looking for Sylva’s cooperation, or his arrest. A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, presided over by Justice D.I. Dipeolu, issued a warrant for his arrest on November 6. The EFCC subsequently shared his photo and details across its social media pages, urging citizens to report any information about his whereabouts.

The Larger Picture

For many Nigerians, this isn’t just another corruption case ,it’s a reminder of how the country’s anti-corruption battles are fought and sometimes politicized. Sylva was once a key figure in Buhari’s oil sector reforms and even contested the Bayelsa governorship race under the All Progressives Congress (APC). His current predicament shows how the tides of politics and accountability can quickly turn.

While EFCC’s move signals seriousness, critics argue that anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria often target political figures only after they fall out of power or influence. Supporters of the agency, on the other hand, say it’s about time high-profile individuals are held accountable.

Public Reactions

The public’s response has been divided. On social media, some Nigerians applaud the EFCC’s renewed momentum, hoping this signals a more fearless fight against graft. Others remain skeptical, questioning whether the case will lead to actual prosecution or fizzle out like many before it.

Either way, the case has reopened old wounds about Nigeria’s oil sector, where billions of dollars have historically vanished into private pockets while infrastructure remains underdeveloped.

What Happens Next

If the EFCC succeeds in arresting Sylva, it will mark a significant milestone for the agency. But it could also ignite new political debates ,especially considering Sylva’s former closeness to the Buhari administration.
Until then, the public watches, the EFCC presses forward, and Nigeria’s long war against corruption continues.
